When you hear the word auto wreckers, you may imagine someone smashing or destroying a car, but this is not what auto wreckers do; they actually care for wrecked cars in a sense. Everyone has most likely seen auto wreckers at work, hauling away a car involved in a crash or just taking a way an inoperable vehicle to a junk yard where it can be used for parts. However, when cars are so banged up that they cannot be used as parts, they are often crushed and used as scrap metal.
Auto wreckers often have other jobs was well. After an automobile accident, the wrecker drivers often sweep up glass and debris off the road. They may also deal with gas or oil spilled on the roadways as well as other hazardous situations. The condition of the cars determines how the wreckers take them away and where they take them. Some cars can be hooked to the wreckers and hauled away to a garage for repair, but heavily damaged cars may require a flatbed to take them away; these cars are taken to junkyards. Auto wreckers may also pick up cars that have not been involved in an accident. Abandoned cars are often hauled away to an impound lot to await driver pickup.
Many auto wreckers work for junk or salvage yards that stores cars that the owner’s insurance company has declared a total loss. At the junkyard, the car is stripped of any valuable parts and the car’s body is sold as scrap metal. Sometimes junkyards are large open fields that contain hundreds of wrecked cars, and these yards make their money selling parts off these cars that people may need. There are times when a person just needs one part to fix their car and do not want to pay full price, especially if they can get a discounted part from a reputable junkyard. Most junkyards do have some type of return policy in case the part does not work or is not the right fit.
A person can find many car parts at a junkyard, including windows, windshields, engine parts, door handles, headlights, tail lights, windshield wipers, knobs, tires, rims, seats, hoods, doors and rims. As long as the junkyard has a car that contains parts compatible with the customer’s care, the customer can either come out and remove the part or have one of the workers remove the part. Parts are generally lower cost when a customer removes it.
Wreckers may also be asked by private citizens to move cars. If the car owner has a car that does not run and is just taking up space in driveway or yard, then if they need it removed, they can call the auto wreckers. Generally, the auto wrecker charges the car owner a small fee to haul the car away and then takes possession of the car. Anyone who sells a car to a junkyard needs to make sure that there are no personal items left in the car, because it is unlikely the items will be returned to the owner.
Wreckers may also come to the rescue of a driver– for a price. If a driver’s car stalls or breaks down on the roadway, they can call an auto wrecker to come out and haul the car to a local garage or to the car owner’s home. Without the wrecker service, it would be impossible for the car owner to move his vehicle to the appropriate place for repairs. Tow trucks and auto wreckers are pretty much the same thing with the exception that the tow trucks often take cars to a specific destination and do not usually work for junkyards.
